Silver Lake is a funky Eastside Los Angeles neighborhood known as LA’s epicenter of hipster culture. Here, you’ll find an abundance of artisanal coffee shops, vegan cafes, live music venues, independent specialty stores, and stylish boutiques. The neighborhood was named for the scenic Silver Lake Reservoir at its center. Silver Lake has a hilly topography traversed by dozens of colorful Insta-worthy staircases.

Silver Lake has risen to prominence in the 21st century as the neighborhood of choice for hipsters, creatives, and those in the know. Silver Lake offers a convenient location within minutes of Downtown LA. and close to both I-5 and the Glendale Freeway. But with its relaxed atmosphere, scenic hills, and tree-lined streets, Silver Lake feels a world away from the sprawl and bustle of Central Los Angeles. Silver Lake’s namesake reservoir provides a scenic outdoor recreation space in the heart of the neighborhood. The neighborhood is also known for its painted staircases, which provide Insta-worthy photo backdrops and great views across the city.

 

Silver Lake is a foodie haven featuring some of Los Angeles’ hippest eateries. Sqirl is a hip café serving an eclectic menu of globally-influenced breakfast and lunch dishes and homemade jams. Night + Market has won a loyal following with its combination of authentic Thai street food and contemporary Californian creativity. Night + Market’s complex and flavorful cuisine has earned multiple James Beard Award nominations and rave reviews in publications such as Zagat. Pine & Crane is another Silver Lake cult favorite drawing on Asian culinary traditions. Pine & Crane’s Taiwanese specialties include delicious jidori chicken, daikon dumplings, mapo tofu, and a variety of rice and noodle dishes. Sophisticated neighborhood trattoria Alimento is one of Silver Lake’s many hidden gems, pairing perfectly executed dishes with an extensive wine selection. Quirky Spanish tapas and flamenco spot El Cid is a hip hangout housed within a converted 1915 movie theater. Coffee lovers are equally well catered for at Silver Lake hotspots such as Intelligentsia and La Colombe. Silver Lake Reservoir features a scenic 2.2-mile trail loop running around the perimeter of Los Angeles’ largest freshwater preserve. The reservoir is the neighborhood’s main outdoor recreation area, with facilities including a dog park, basketball court, and the 2.5-acre greenspace of Silver Lake Meadow. The brightly decorated Micheltorena Stairs has been described as the most Instagrammed staircase in Los Angeles. The Micheltorena Stairs are one of several such colorful stairways in Silver Lake.
